Stand-Up Specials To Watch When Someone Laughs At Your Joke And You Consider A Career In Comedy10/14/2019 One of my favorite things to do in my free time (all the time) is watch stand-up specials from my favorite comedians. Whether you're looking for some new specials to add to your rotation or you've just managed to make it this far in life without ever watching one, here are my recommendations that'll have you laughing until your stomach hurts and saying, "Oh my god, how is it already two in the morning I have to be up early for work what's wrong with me?" 1. John Mulaney, "Kid Gorgeous" John Mulaney has become the king of Netflix comedy specials, and for good reason. Whether he's talking about his childhood in Chicago, his party days in college, or his time as a writer on Saturday Night Live, his genius writing and quick wit remains the same. "Kid Gorgeous" is his newest and best work yet, but older specials like "The Comeback Kid" and "New In Town" are also iconic and if you choose to watch them I'll be able to recite parts back to you. 2. Bo Burnham, "Make Happy" If you combine self-deprecating humor and a sarcastic attitude with original music, you get Bo Burnham. I've been a fan of Bo since his under-appreciated show, Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, aired on MTV back in 2013, and he continues to have some of the smartest and sharpest comedic takes on the world. "Make Happy" features some of his best satirical songs yet, such as "Straight White Male" and "Lower Your Expectations," and he closes the show with a Kanye West parody about Chipotle that I listen to on a consistent basis. If you want more from Bo (you will), make sure to also check out his other special, "What." 3. Nate Bargatze, "The Tennessee Kid" I discovered Nate Bargatze after watching "The Standups" on Netflix and I've been a fan ever since. He has a way of telling stories about everyday occurrences - like reading Yelp reviews and struggling to order at Starbucks - with such a calm demeanor that it somehow makes him even funnier. "The Tennessee Kid" is his first headline special for Netflix, and I'm just going to keep watching it on repeat until they get it together and gives me another one. (Side note: if you're a fan of the show New Girl, he reminds me so much of Nick Miller.) 4. Chelsea Peretti, "One of the Greats" You probably know her as the iconic Gina Linetti from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but if you don't then you need to start studying. With incredible comedic timing, she alternates between methods of extreme confidence and genuine introspection while discussing topics like the joys of staying home and life as a female comedian. Proving the title of this special right, Chelsea Peretti remains completely relatable and proves that she's one of the sharpest comedians right now. 5. Ali Wong, "Baby Cobra" I watched Ali Wong's stand-up for the first time over the summer and I don't know what took me so long. I'm not going to call her unfiltered because that's just a stupid word applied to women who choose to speak freely, so instead I'm going to say "hysterical," "real," and "Ali, if you're reading this, let's be friends." With the ability to make me laugh at every story she tells about her relationships and career, she never fails to miss a beat in this special (or in her latest one, "Hard Knock Wife.") Now that I've reminisced on all of my favorites, I'm going to go watch them again and so should you.
